In the spring of 2002, I won the University of Michigan College of Engineering Outstanding Student Instructor Award. My ENG 101 Intro to Programming students nominated me for this award based on their experiences with me teaching them programming. I have worked so hard to excite and motivate my students, this is really an honor for me, and a challenge to live up to these expectations.

Interestingly, I am mentioned on a www.RateMyProfessor.com website review for another professor (click on the link to see, it's the second review down) one of our departmental secretaries brought this to my attention.

I have been a teacher (Graduate Student Instructor) for 7 semesters since coming to the University of Michigan. I really enjoy teaching and since my goal is teaching and research in an academic position, I have worked really hard to improve my teaching. Here are some of my evaluations (note that they are anonymous):

*****

Mr. Norton is a good teacher. He has a good sense of balance between keeping students interested and teaching them what they need to know.”

*****

He was good and concerned with student progress. Extremely enthusiastic.”

*****

Very enthusiastic. Made coming to class much more enjoyable. Good at returning emails. Could have learned names better.”

–I admit that I have a problem learning names! – John

*****

“The GSI was very helpful in explaining the lecture. The GSI was also very helpful with meeting students after class. The GSI was a great instructor/teacher. I would highly recommend him.”

*****

John Norton was very prepared, on time, easy to contact, a great discussion leader, and really helped me throughout the course.

*****

John, you were the best GSI I’ve had yet. Discussion has made Engin 100 bearable…and even fun. Your upbeat attitude is a relief after a week of dry, difficult lectures. Our Friday class was fun and helpful. Thank you for all of your help.”
